A recent Cochrane Review titled "Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth" showed a very high number of positive birth outcomes when a doula was present.

Women also reported having a more positive childbirth experience

and the overall cesarean rate decreased by 50%

ANTEPARTUM DOULA

Provides the mother and her family with much needed physical and emotional help during pregnancy if complications require the mother to be on bedrest. Many tasks like household organization, care of older siblings, running errands and providing companionship would be performed.

BIRTH DOULA

Provides physical and emotional support to mother and her partner before, during and after birth. She provides companionship, using comfort measures, and helps the mom gather needed in order to make informed decisions.

POSTPARTUM DOULA

Provides help to the family during transition into parenthood. Her duties are similar to the antepartum doula. She also helps with infant feeding and care, household organization, meal preparation, care of older sibling(s), run errands, and provide companionship.

CHILDBIRTH EDUCATOR

Provides pertinent information to expectant parents about what occurs during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first few weeks of postpartum. These classes provide information on the importance of birth plans, labor coping techniques, comfort measures, and early postpartum recovery.
